The Sabbath Blessing for Everyone

After reciting the individual blessing over a boy or girl, the priestly blessing or Aaronic benediction is now spoken over each child (either individually or as a group):

Yevarechecha Adonai (YHVH), ve’Yishmerecha.Adonai (Yehovah) bless you and keep you.

Ya’eir Adonai (YHVH) panav eilehcha,Adonai (Yehovah) make His face to shine upon you,

vi’chunehka.and be gracious to you.

Yissa Adonai (YHVH) panav eilehcha,Adonai (Yehovah) lift up His countenance upon you,

ve’yaseim lecha shalom.and give you peace.

(Numbers 6:24)

Though tradition has replaced God’s personal name with Adonai in this blessing, Aaron was told to speak God’s personal name YHVH (often pronounced Yahweh or Yehovah) over the People of Israel.

In fact, the reason Yehovah gave this blessing to the priesthood of Israel is so that His name would be placed upon the people, and then He will bless them.  He says,

“In this way they are to put My name on the people of Israel, so that I will bless them.”   (Numbers 6:27)

Notice, too, that this blessing is not a request.

Instead, the blessing is spoken as a declaration by one with divine authority, as a priest of a holy nation.

After giving the priestly benediction, some add another blessing from Isaiah 11:2:

“The Spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him , the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the LORD.”

When we speak this blessing over our children, grandchildren, nephews, nieces, students and the greater community around us, we are asking for God’s wisdom and discernment, His power, and His knowledge to rest on them.

We are asking the Lord to not only place the name of Yehovah on our children but also the mind of Messiah Yeshua, which is the mind of Yehovah Himself.

Can you imagine performing any other act more highly honored than that?

We can follow this blessing with individual words of encouragement suited to the child’s own spiritual, emotional, or physical needs.

Finally, some conclude the blessing with a hug or kiss.

Blessed are the poor in spirit…

“Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 5:3).

The word “blessed” really means happy. Happy are those who realize their need for redemption. The gospel is to be preached to the poor—that is, those who recognize their spiritual need—not to the spiritually proud.

“The proud heart strives to earn salvation; but both our title to heaven and our fitness for it are found in the righteousness of Christ” (The Desire of Ages, p. 300). The precious gift of God is for only those who realize their own poverty.

But, when it comes to the spiritual realm, nothing is withheld from the soul that feels its need. “For thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy; I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones” (Isaiah 57:15).

What Did Jesus Hope to Convey through the Beatitudes?

The word beatitude comes from the Latin word beatitudo, meaning blessedness. Eight times during the opening lines of Jesus’s revolutionary Sermon, He repeats the phrase “blessed are.” The message He means to convey through these proclamations of blessing—or beatitudes—is simple, but it flies in the face of everything the spiritual leaders were teaching at the time.

With each conditional promise of provision came an instruction in true righteousness, illustrated by one small character trait.

Up to that point, the Jewish people had been raised on long lists of strict rules and regulations taught by the Scribes and Pharisees through the law of Moses. But no one had ever been able to fulfill all the requirements of the law and obtain righteousness. No. Not one. Yet, Jesus was taking these impossible laws, boiling them down to their truest essence, and then baiting the proclamation with promises of provision from God rather than judgment. He spoke to His audience as if these collective traits were attainable and theirs for the taking.

The unregenerate listeners were mesmerized. They could hear the revelatory truth in Jesus’s words—feel it. They’d already witnessed His miracles and knew Jesus possessed God’s power. They instinctively believed in the promises He preached and longed for them. But how could they live this countercultural lifestyle and become these perfect people Jesus described? To do so, their righteousness would have to exceed that of the Scribes and Pharisees (Matthew 5:20).

Meanwhile, Jesus’s disciples basked in the news of all they’d inherited through Christ. They realized on that day that the promises Jesus spoke of were a byproduct of the true blessing—the ability, through Christ’s power, to live a life of righteousness.

Pursuing Christ, the real blessing

If we think God’s blessing is mainly of things in the material realm, we’ll pursue these things, spend our prayer time asking God for them, and when we don’t get them, wonder whether we’re blessed by God. Meanwhile, we’ll miss enjoying the broader, fuller, and more real blessing of God—Christ for our experience and enjoyment. By focusing on and pursuing Christ, we can enjoy the all-inclusive Spirit as the top blessing of God!

Surely we should be thankful for the material things the Lord gives us. But we’re truly blessed when we experience Christ as our love, our peace, our patience, our satisfaction, our joy, and so many other aspects of Himself.

We have this wonderful Person now within us, the greatest blessing in the universe!

Blessed are they which are persecuted…

“Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness’ sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for My sake. Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you” (Matthew 5:10-12).

To all who refuse God’s infinite love, Christianity will be a disturbing element. “The light of Christ sweeps away the darkness that covers their sins…While those who yield to the influence of the Holy Spirit begin war with themselves, those who cling to sin war against the truth and its representatives” (The Desire of Ages, p. 306).

So there is bound to be strife as long as truth is in the world, and more bitter strife as we near the end, the day of the final triumph of truth. But remember that through it all is blessing, blessing, blessing—the happiness of God.

Significance of the Beatitudes

Most of us approached the Beatitudes as if there’s some sort of platitude phraseology and principles on how to live life. I mean that’s usually how they’re approached, but that is very far removed from what they actually are. These are like laser-guided bombs in the culture that Jesus was preaching to. I mean, these quips, these statements, these things that we’ve come to recite in the flannel board of our youth are devastating statements that turn Jesus’ culture on its ear completely. It is not what they expected to hear it. It takes aim at all of these prized dispositions and virtues and their worldview. They didn’t expect this to come out of Jesus’ mouth and wherever Jesus went, He preached these. These aren’t platitudinal. I mean, these are detonated on the culture.

I’ll give you an example. Blessed are the poor in spirit for theirs is the kingdom of God. That’s not what they expected to come before theirs is the kingdom of God. What they expected to hear was, «You’re Abraham, therefore yours is the kingdom of God.» What Jesus said was, «Blessed are the poor in spirit.» Well, they believed in self-righteousness because of who they were. Jesus says, «No, it’s actually the broken people, those who recognize their need for God, the poor in spirit, people who are spiritual beggars inherit the kingdom.» He didn’t say, Abraham, He didn’t say the descendants of Abraham, and He didn’t say Jews, and He didn’t say Pharisees. He didn’t say good people. He didn’t say moral people, He said broken people. Those are the ones that inherit the kingdom of God.

So Jesus’ audience is sitting there having learned what they’ve learned from their tradition, and Jesus drops this grenade and it touches every nerve in the audience because every single one of them underneath the facade of their life realizes they actually are poor in spirit. And so He turns the thing upside down.

They realize, as the Bible will go on to explain, that they need righteousness which is much greater than their own, which is exactly what Jesus says in Matthew chapter five unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and the Pharisees, you shall not enter the kingdom of heaven. Basically what He said was, «You’re not getting in in your own righteousness.»

And so the Beatitudes go through and they just throw off all of these misunderstandings about what constitutes a devotion to God and what man truly needs. It is the Beatitudes, which ultimately get Jesus killed as He explains them in every possible way that He can as they flow. That is their principle and core meeting through all of His teaching and put Him on the cross, and save those by His death who are poor in spirit.

The Blessing of Suffering Like Jesus Did

But what if you’re going through a hard time and struggle to see any blessings in your life? I’ve been there. But even in suffering, we’re blessed because it can help us understand Jesus even more. Paul, Peter, and James all talk about suffering being a blessing in the letters they wrote in Scripture.

On that same trip to Panama, I heard this passage for the first time:

Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish . . . that I may know him and the power of his resurrection, and may share his sufferings, becoming like him in his death. (Philippians 3:8–10)

Jesus suffered when he was killed, so we could have access to God and have life in him. He was lonely, mocked, betrayed, and felt extreme physical pain. Jesus suffered, and it’s a blessing to participate in suffering too. Suffering makes us desperate. And when we’re desperate, we more readily rely on God. Suffering also helps us relate with Jesus more, to know what he had to go through.

So if you’re going through any kind of suffering––whether problems in your family, loneliness or depression, or struggling in a class––suffering can be a blessing.

Sometimes Jesus may ask us if we’re willing to suffer embarrassment or insecurity by telling a friend about him. Or we might experience some suffering if he calls us to somewhere new.

When I felt called to join InterVarsity staff and move across the country, it required sacrificing what I was used to, even blessings like an amazing community, to work for a ministry that I love. But in that comparably tiny sacrifice, I better understood what Jesus experienced giving his whole life for us.

Suffering like Jesus did is a blessing.

As we enter into a new year, after a season so focused on getting and receiving lots of stuff, may we keep in mind the many more significant blessings God gives us. Take a few minutes to journal through these questions or talk to a friend:

FOUR WAYS TO CREATE THE ATMOSPHERE FOR THE BLESSING

It is amazing to know that man on his own can originate the atmosphere of blessing around his life. This book will reveal some eternal truth that have stood the test of time on this issue.

Based on the references we have above, God told Abraham how to activate the blessing. Abraham fulfilled the conditions and God said to him
“because you have done this, in blessing I will bless thee, in multiplying, I will multiply thy seed, Isaac equally told Esau what to do to have the blessing. Rebecca also confirmed the same to Jacob. The one that complied first won the game. it is not essentially different today, we shall simply itemize here four contemporary ways the atmosphere of blessing can be created in any man’s life. You cannot miss it.

1. GIVE YOUR LIFE TO JESUS
You must be born again. That which is born of the flesh is flesh, that which is born of the spirit is spirit. There is a day you were born in the flesh. We call it birthday and you know it.

There also must be a day you are born in the spirit. You must be sure of this. The good thing is that you can have the experience even right now if you have not done so before. Follow the prayers at the end of this book and consider it done. Make the Bible and the material in your hand your companion.

The Holy Ghost will guide and empower you. You will never fail. You are now positioned to receive every spiritual blessing.

Read this: How do i give my life to Christ

2. YOUR FAITH:
We have already cited the blessing of father Abraham above, so blessed that God credited the blessing of entire mankind to him. what this means is that whatsoever he wishes or desires are available to him. They could be spiritual or physical, tangible or intangible, be name it.

See this article about faith

Furthermore, the Bible again revealed the secrets of this blessing in Romans 4:18 to 21 thus:-

Our responsibility is to strongly believe the word of God like Abraham. There is nothing your life cannot accomplish once your faith is up to it. The Bible says nothing shall be impossible to him that believe.

3. YOUR LIFE STYLE:

The blessing demands a disciplined life style. It will be good to look at what the Bible says about this in the book of James chapter 1 verses 5-8 viz:

The Bible in the same way presented the an account of the life style of a man who
lost the blessing in Hebrews 12 verse 16 and 17. Thus:-

Any life that seek the blessing must know how to appreciate true values and must not be unstable That man must have value for spiritual things Esau lacked these qualities. He valued food for his stomach above his birthright.

The same way some today value earthly pleasures above Kingdom blessings. Because of his profane and unstable life style he lost the blessings. Therefore, a man’s life style invariably accounts for how far he can manifest divine blessing.

4. YOUR GIVING:

It is already pointed out that blessing is a spiritual endowment. It is capable of producing wealth and riches progressively. And giving is that virtue that ignites the blessing to produce and increase.

The Bible expressly teachers that it is the way man uses what he has that will attract what he doesn’t have. See this post

The bible says “give and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again.

The only condition that manifests blessing to the level of good measure that runs over, is giving. A man that gives always will certainly become God’s channel to bless lives and provide for Kingdom activities on earth.

That man shall never be in lack. Whatever he gives out is divinely replenished running over. One only needs to believe this. If you key yourself into it: Your generation will bear testimony that you are blessed indeed.

Context of the Beatitudes

The Beatitudes were delivered by Jesus Christ during the Sermon on the Mount, a significant and well-documented event in the New Testament found in the Gospel of Matthew (Matthew 5-7). The context of the Beatitudes is crucial for a comprehensive understanding of their significance. In this sermon, Jesus addressed a large crowd of disciples and followers, presenting a comprehensive guide to righteous living and the principles of the Kingdom of Heaven. The Beatitudes, the beginning of this sermon, set the tone for the rest of Jesus’ teachings in the Sermon on the Mount.

Jesus preached powerful sermons that exposed error and breathed revelation during His ministry on earth. In His Sermon on the Mount, our Lord revealed eight mysterious promises accompanying Kingdom living. In awe and wonder, the disciples marveled at Jesus’s explanation of the beatitudes, knowing that the blessings were already theirs—while masses of mountainside seekers hung on Jesus’s words of hope.

“Never before had His audience heard such marvelous truths presented in such an interesting and meaningful manner. They longed to have those promises incarnate in their lives. And so do we,” says Chuck Swindoll in The Beatitudes: Three Observations.

What Are the Beatitudes?

This series of blessings that Jesus pronounced at the beginning of his ministry described the present and coming kingdom of God. Kingdom beatitudes also occur in Luke 6:20–22, and Jesus speaks general blessings on other occasions such as in Matthew 11:6, Luke 11:28, and John 20:29.

The first and eighth beatitudes in Matthew envelop the others with the promise of the kingdom itself (Matthew 5:3,10). The first beatitude in Luke also promises the kingdom (Luke 6:20).

In all four blessings in Luke and the first four in Matthew, the most unlikely of people are pronounced blessed—the poor, the hungry, the meek. They are downtrodden and tired, yet because they have lived to see the day of God’s benevolent rule being established in this world, Jesus pronounces them blessed. Jesus confirms what they have hoped for all along: as God comes to reign, he will right all wrongs, and everyone who lives to see and welcome his rule—even and especially the downtrodden—will be blessed.

The second four beatitudes in Matthew 5 focus on those who join in God’s great restoration and reversal-work of mercy and justice. Jesus pronounces blessings on those who enact mercy, integrity, peace, and righteousness or justice (Matthew 5:7–10).

The pronouncements or promises express reversals of expectation—those who are hungry will be satisfied, those who mourn will be comforted and laugh, and those who are meek will inherit the whole earth. As God’s reign is established in this world, its effects will be life-changing for those who most need mercy and justice and for all those who share in Jesus’ ministry.

Why are there evil people with many “blessings”?

Part of the answer to that is Satan is leaving them right where they are — complacent and prideful. If they were to be stripped of their job title, evicted from the mansion or humiliated publicly, if they were knocked all the way to the bottom they might have to look up. They might search for answers. And when people are searching for God they will find him. (Deut. 4:29) But when people think they have earned everything and got to their position by their own merit, and not the grace of God, they don’t need a God. They essentially are a god.

Not having worldly things and what society tells you are the signs of success does not mean you are not blessed. In fact you might be more blessed! Those who have less to lose are quicker to turn to a savior. For if you have all the earthly treasure, would you truly walk away from it?

When we read about a rich young man who wanted to follow Jesus in Matthew 19, he couldn’t do it. Why? Because when he asked Jesus how to obtain eternal life, “Jesus told him, “If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow Me. When the young man heard this, he went away in sorrow, because he had great wealth. Then Jesus said to His disciples, “Truly I tell you, it is hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven.”

Experiencing God’s blessing

Christ dwells in us as the all-inclusive Spirit, so we can experience Him in a personal, subjective way by contacting Him with our spirit. We can pray, call on His name, and read His Word. By simply turning to Christ in our spirit, talking to Him throughout the day, we can enjoy Him as our rich portion.

Suppose you pray for a better job and get a higher paying position. Happily, you thank the Lord for it. But what happens when the new work environment presents some difficulties? If you realize that God didn’t just bless you with a new job but with much more, with the all-inclusive Christ who lives in you, you’ll contact the Lord as the life-giving Spirit dwelling in your spirit. So instead of asking the Lord to take away the problems or bless you with another job, you’ll open your heart to Him and asked Him to be your wisdom, strength, whatever you need, to face the troubles at work. You’ll begin to experience Christ as the bountiful supply in that difficult situation. You’ll enjoy Him—the top blessing.
